Tuesday, January 14, to Wednesday, January 23, 2025
From Tuesday, January 14, to Wednesday, January 23, SavATree, hired by Sugar House Park Authority, will prune 35 trees spread throughout the 110 acres of Sugar House Park. These special trees were selected to represent their species in the future (pending accreditation) Sugar House Park arboretum.
What to Expect
Park visitors can expect noise and machinery on the grass or roadway.
Practice extra caution and stay clear of coned areas or drop zones where branches may fall.
The wood chips created from the pruning will be placed in piles in designated areas for future use at 'Mulch Madness' a volunteer event in March 2025.
Do not take or remove any bark mulch.
Funding Sources
The pruning and tree care is part of an arboretum start-up project funded by Sugar House Park Authority, a $5,000 grant from the David R. Keller Sustainability Prize, and matched by a $15,000 Utah Community Forestry Partnership Grant from the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.
Scope of Project
The proposed project includes;
Pruning of specimen trees and processing of debris into mulch
Volunteer/public event to remove grass in a ring around the tree and replace it with mulch.
Purchase and install tree tags on each specimen tree
Documentation and submission to Arbnet.org
Why mulch? Well-placed mulch around a tree has numerous health benefits.
Benefits of Mulching
Well-placed mulch around a tree has numerous benefits for the health of the tree, including:
A layer of mulch will help retain water in the soil.
By covering the soil, mulch will prevent soil compaction, which can harm the tree’s roots.
Mulch also regulates the temperature of the soil
A tree with a circle of mulch around it will have less competition from grass and be better protected from lawnmowers.
